2022 LIDS Photography Display and Competition

Dahlias through the Camera’s Lens

  • SEPTEMBER 3, 2022 – 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
  • SEPTEMBER 4, 2022 – 10:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Held at The Bayard Cutting Arboretum, Great River, NY - UPPER CARRIAGE HOUSE

Open to all Photographers

  • Beginner / Novice – Has not won a ribbon at prior show
  • Amateur / Advanced – Experienced photographer
  • Professional – Self promoting or income from photography

Thursday, September 1: 12:00pm – 5:00pm
Friday, September 2: 2:00pm – 7:00pm

Rules

  • Dahlias must be the focus of the picture
  • Photograph must be entered in correct Class (see below)
  • Exhibitor must have taken the photograph since the last show (10/2019)
  • Exhibitor may submit up to two photographs per Class
  • Photo must be displayed using a mat frame, mat board or foam board –
  • NO GLASS
  • Photo may be displayed with or without a border
  • Photo must be a minimum of 8” X 10”
  • Completed entry may not exceed 11” X 14” including frame
  • Each entry must have the following information on the back:
    - exhibitor’s name
    - email and / or phone number
    - exhibitors experience level (Beginner, Amateur, Professional)
    - class of photo (1 – 4)
    - arrow indicating the top of photo
  • No names, initials or titles should be visible from the front of the entry
  • Failure to follow the rules will result in disqualification

Judging

  • Judges will rate the entries based on composition, impact, and technique.
  • 1st , 2nd , and 3rd place ribbons will be award in each of the three experience levels.
  • Honorable Mention ribbons will be awarded as warranted.
  • Best in Show and First and Second Runner UP ribbons will be awarded.
  • Judges’ decisions are final.
  • If an entry doesn’t merit an award, it will not get one even if it is the only one submitted in its class.

Classes of Photographs

  1. Dahlia Portrait: A single dahlia that includes the entire bloom with all petals showing
  2. Two or More Dahlias in Full Bloom: May be the same or different variety
  3. Macro / Artistic Impression: May be an enhanced or altered image. Extensive use of advanced software application (e.g. Photoshop) is not permitted in Beginner level
  4. Dahlias with Children or Insects: Dahlia bloom must be the focus Basic editing such as cropping, and brightness, contrast and color adjustment may be used in any class.

Pickup of Entries

  • Exhibitors who wish to do so must pick up their entries at the end of the show.
  • Photos will be available for pick up from 4PM to 5PM on Sunday. (The park closes at 5PM.)
  • Any entry not picked up will be donated to the Long Island Dahlia Society for fund raising.

Suggested donation of $1 / entry, max $5 / exhibitor to cover costs.

The Long Island Dahlia Society assumes no responsibility for any loss, theft or damage to any entry.
