Check the visitors map, as you stroll from Arboretum’s main parking lot through the pinetum, you will find the expansive William Wolkoff Dahlia Garden, which is the largest public dahlia garden on the east coast.

Types of Dahlias

The garden boasts over 1,300 dahlias plants with 300 varieties. Dahlias come in a variety of colors and forms. You will find the large “dinner-plate” size dahlias to the tiny ball dahlias, with all varieties in-between. From a single color to variegated to blends, this stunning garden displays the full range of colors of the dahlia.

Best Time for Blooms

Dahlias start to bloom in June and reach their peak of color in August and September, and will continue to bloom until frost. The garden attracts hundreds of visitors each year, including artists, photographers, and flower lovers of all ages. In addition to attracting a wide variety of insects and butterflies, you will witness migrating monarchs in September and October feeding on dahlias. You can find a shady spot to sit under the gazebo as you enjoy your visit. The garden has expanded to include additional beds for the 2023 season.

Dahlia Show

The Long Island Dahlia Society hosts a dahlia show each year in the Carriage House. The show is held over Labor Day weekend. Dahlia growers from all over the east bring their blooms to display and compete amongst the top growers in the region. This is another excellent way to see the “best of best” dahlias on display.
